Europe is going all-in on AI for heart health. The European Cardiovascular Health Data and AI Network (CHAIN), led by the European Society of Cardiology, is connecting hospitals, registries, and health data centers across 20 countries to test and deploy AI tools for cardiovascular disease. The 36-month initiative aims to enable earlier diagnoses, smarter clinical decisions, and more consistent care — at scale.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills 1 in 3 Europeans and costs the EU over €282 billion annually — and a fragmented, inconsistent approach to health data and AI has made it hard to tackle at scale. Enter CHAIN (European Cardiovascular Health Data and AI Network), a new EU4Health-funded initiative coordinated by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) that aims to change that.
CHAIN will build a federated, secure ecosystem — aligned with the European Health Data Space (EHDS) — connecting hospitals, disease registries, and health data centers across 20 countries. The goal: test, validate, and deploy AI tools that help clinicians detect disease earlier, make better decisions, and deliver more consistent care. Validated tools will be catalogued in a European repository, complete with "AI passports" documenting their performance and clinical suitability.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: CHAIN represents one of the most ambitious efforts yet to move AI in cardiology from promise to practice — standardizing how tools are built, tested, and trusted across an entire continent.
