Brazil's Ribeirão Preto Blood Center is upgrading to fully automated blood processing using Terumo BCT's Reveos™ systems — a first for any public blood center in the country. The move comes as transfusion demand climbed 3.5% in 2025 while donations fell ~2%, widening a critical supply gap. The center will also serve as a national reference site to help other public blood services modernize.
Brazil's Ribeirão Preto Blood Center, which supports roughly 120,000 transfusions a year across São Paulo State, is making a major leap forward by adopting Terumo BCT's Reveos™ Automated Blood Processing Systems — transitioning from a semi-automated workflow to a fully integrated operation. It's the first large-scale Reveos deployment in Brazil and the first in a public blood center, positioning Ribeirão Preto as a national reference site for other public blood services eyeing automation.
The upgrade is driven by a widening mismatch between supply and demand. In 2025, the center supported 119,000 transfusions — up 3.5% year-over-year — while donations dropped about 2%, continuing a downward trend that began in 2019 with no reversal in sight. Automation is seen as the key lever to boost efficiency and output without requiring more staff or space.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: As blood shortages become a growing global concern, this project shows that public health systems in emerging markets can adopt advanced automation to bridge supply gaps — and potentially serve as a blueprint for other resource-constrained blood services worldwide.
