Germany's new MIGRA-MD program is putting a digital spin on migraine care, combining physician training, patient apps, and expert videos to close the treatment gap. The multicenter trial is running across 50 practices with 1,000 patients enrolled. If it works, the program could become standard care under Germany's statutory health insurance system.
Migraine affects roughly 1 in 10 people, yet many patients still don't receive care that aligns with clinical guidelines. Germany's MIGRA-MD program is looking to fix that with a structured, multimodal, and fully digital approach to migraine management — combining specialist training, a patient-facing app, and an online learning platform to boost both treatment quality and patient self-efficacy.
Here's how it works: participating physicians receive training in guideline-based migraine care, while patients log their headaches in a dedicated app and complete questionnaires ahead of appointments. That data feeds into a physician portal, giving doctors a ready-made overview before the visit even begins. A digital learning platform rounds things out, offering expert-led videos and webinars developed by physicians, psychologists, and physical therapists.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: If MIGRA-MD proves effective, it's slated to be folded into Germany's standard statutory health insurance coverage — a move that could significantly expand access to high-quality, guideline-based migraine care for millions of patients.
