A new 13-item mental health screening tool can identify depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use disorders, and suicide risk in just 2–10 minutes — far faster than the 45+ minutes typical assessments take. Validated in a US psychiatric emergency department for the first time, the mwTool-13 showed 95% sensitivity for detecting any psychiatric disorder with just its first three questions, offering a promising path toward more equitable mental healthcare.
Psychiatric emergency departments often rely on multiple screening tools that can take over 45 minutes to administer — a burden on both patients and providers. A new 13-item Mental Wellness Tool (mwTool-13) aims to change that, screening for depression, anxiety, psychosis, mania, substance use disorders (SUDs), and suicide risk all in one go, in just 2–10 minutes.
Published in Psychiatric Services, the study validated the tool among 269 patients at a New York City psychiatric ED (mean age 40; 53% female; 47% Latinx). Notably, the first three questions alone detected any psychiatric disorder with 95% sensitivity — making rapid triage more feasible than ever. The tool was designed with health equity in mind, offering administration in both English and Spanish and targeting hard-to-reach populations who may not otherwise engage with mental health services.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: A single, fast, comprehensive screening tool could dramatically improve early detection of treatable psychiatric conditions — especially among marginalized groups — while easing the strain on overstretched emergency mental health services.
