Not all trauma is created equal — at least not genetically. A new study of over 144,000 people found that genetic factors play a bigger role in PTSD risk for some trauma types, especially childhood neglect, than others. The findings suggest that knowing both a person's DNA and their trauma history could one day help identify who needs early mental health support.
A landmark study published in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology has found that the genetic underpinnings of PTSD aren't one-size-fits-all — they vary depending on the type of trauma a person experiences. Researchers from King's College London analyzed data from over 144,700 individuals across multiple UK biobanks, examining 11 different trauma types and their interaction with genetic risk.
The big finding: childhood traumas, particularly emotional neglect, showed the strongest gene-trauma interactions. One gene, FAM120A — involved in the brain's fear and stress processing — interacted significantly more with childhood emotional neglect than with any other trauma studied. Childhood abuse was more strongly associated with PTSD symptoms overall, but neglect showed a greater genetic influence.
