Sentara Health is taking AI beyond administrative tasks and putting it to work during actual patient encounters. The not-for-profit health system — which operates 12 hospitals and over 400 care sites in Virginia and North Carolina — has launched a 90-day pilot with GW RhythmX, testing an AI precision care platform with 30 physicians and advanced practice providers in family and internal medicine across two markets.
The platform isn't just another ambient scribe. It synthesizes patient history, evidence-based guidelines, care gaps, social determinants of health, payer requirements, and formulary data to deliver hyper-personalized, next-best-action recommendations in real time during the clinical encounter. The goal: help primary care teams manage increasingly complex patients without burning out clinicians or flooding specialists with unnecessary referrals. The pilot is part of Sentara's broader "care model redesign" — a team-based ambulatory care strategy pairing physicians, APPs, nurses, pharmacists, and care managers with AI and telehealth tools to expand capacity without expanding headcount.
