Past sexual violence leaves a lasting mark on mental health. A new JAMA Psychiatry study found that people with a history of sexual violence experienced more severe PTSD symptoms and slower recovery after a subsequent nonsexual traumatic event. Hypervigilance was the most prominent symptom in this group, highlighting the compounding mental health burden of prior sexual trauma.
A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry reveals that a history of sexual violence (SV) doesn't just affect survivors in the immediate aftermath — it also amplifies PTSD symptoms when they experience a completely different traumatic event later in life. Researchers used data from the AURORA longitudinal cohort study, tracking over 2,400 adults who visited an emergency department within 72 hours of a traumatic event (mostly motor vehicle collisions).
Participants with a prior SV history showed significantly higher PTSD symptom scores at every follow-up point over 12 months, and their recovery was notably slower compared to those without such a history. Among the four PTSD symptom clusters, hypervigilance stood out as the most severe in the SV group.
