The bigger question isn't what's in the tampon — it's what gets into the body. Researchers at Columbia University are using a 3D vaginal tissue model to measure how much lead actually penetrates the vaginal lining, while an upcoming epidemiologic study will track menstrual product use and analyze participants' menstrual blood for metal content. California has already passed legislation requiring manufacturers to report toxic metal concentrations by end of 2026.
