A tropical mosquito species capable of transmitting dengue, Zika, and chikungunya has been found breeding in east London — a UK first. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says the public risk remains low, as the species can't survive long-term in the UK's cooler climate. Control measures are already underway to destroy the larvae.
For the first time ever, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes — the tropical species responsible for spreading dengue, Zika, and chikungunya — have been found breeding in the UK. The insects and their larvae were discovered at residential properties in east London through the UKHSA's Mosquito Watch surveillance scheme. While this marks the fourth detection of the species in the UK in recent years, it's the first confirmed instance of breeding.
Officials believe the mosquitoes arrived as "accidental importations," hitchhiking in vehicles, luggage, or imported plants. The UKHSA has ramped up trapping and surveillance in the area and deployed control measures to destroy the larvae. Importantly, there's no evidence the mosquitoes have caused any human infections or spread beyond the immediate residential area.
Key Takeaways:
Why it matters: Climate change is warming the UK, and experts warn that sightings of invasive mosquitoes will become more frequent. While the immediate threat is minimal, this discovery signals a need for continued vigilance and robust surveillance infrastructure to prevent future disease transmission risks.
