A more affordable version of a key blood cancer drug is now official. The FDA has granted final approval to Alembic Pharmaceuticals' generic venetoclax tablets for adults with CLL/SLL and newly diagnosed AML — making the BCL-2 inhibitor more accessible. As a first-to-file applicant, Alembic may also qualify for 180 days of market exclusivity on the generic.
The FDA has officially approved a generic version of venetoclax (Venclexta), the widely used BCL-2 inhibitor, for adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). The approval — granted to Alembic Pharmaceuticals — also covers venetoclax in combination with azacitidine, decitabine, or low-dose cytarabine for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients aged 75+ or those who can't tolerate intensive chemotherapy.
The generic covers 10-mg, 50-mg, and 100-mg tablets and is therapeutically equivalent to AbbVie's branded Venclexta. As the first applicant with a substantially complete ANDA and a paragraph IV certification, Alembic may be eligible for 180 days of generic market exclusivity — a significant commercial advantage.
Key Takeaways
Why it matters: Generic approval could meaningfully lower costs for patients with these blood cancers, broadening access to a treatment that has become a cornerstone of CLL and AML therapy.
