Optum Rx is rolling out a virtual-first menopause care program that connects eligible women with Menopause Society-certified clinicians through their pharmacy benefit. The program offers hormonal and nonhormonal therapies, symptom tracking, coaching, and education. A pilot showed 80% of participants saw symptom improvement, with an average of five symptoms eliminated.
Optum Rx is launching a new virtual-first program designed to bring specialized menopause care into the pharmacy benefit — an area the company calls one of the most underserved in healthcare. The program connects eligible women with clinicians certified by the Menopause Society and offers access to both hormonal and nonhormonal therapies, symptom tracking tools, educational resources, and one-on-one coaching.
The program is built to work alongside a member's existing care team — think primary care doctors and gynecologists — rather than replace it. After enrolling, members receive a personalized health assessment to shape their treatment plan. Given that menopause symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats can last a median of seven years, the program is designed for long-term support.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Beyond quality of life, untreated menopause symptoms can raise the risk of serious long-term conditions like osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. By embedding menopause care into the pharmacy benefit, Optum Rx is signaling a broader shift toward addressing women's health gaps at the system level.
