A major mpox vaccine donation is shoring up global outbreak readiness. Danish vaccine maker Bavarian Nordic is donating 75,000 doses of its MVA-BN vaccine to a WHO-managed global emergency stockpile — on top of a separate 150,000-dose supply contract. The move is aimed at strengthening preparedness against future mpox outbreaks worldwide.
A major mpox vaccine donation is shoring up global outbreak readiness. Danish vaccine maker Bavarian Nordic has announced it will donate 75,000 doses of its MVA-BN vaccine to a newly established global mpox emergency stockpile. The stockpile is managed by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision, a mechanism hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The donation comes in addition to a separate contract under which Bavarian Nordic will supply 150,000 doses to the same stockpile — bringing the company's total contribution to 225,000 doses. Mpox, a viral disease that causes fever and skin lesions and spreads through close physical contact, has prompted growing international concern over preparedness gaps.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: The creation of a dedicated global mpox vaccine stockpile marks a meaningful step forward in international outbreak preparedness. Having a ready reserve of vaccines could be critical in containing future mpox surges before they escalate into wider public health emergencies.
