Walmart is rolling out a major benefits expansion for its 1.6 million U.S. employees starting January 1, 2027. The package includes a "Zero Dollar prescription tier" covering 250+ medications, a new Rare Conditions Center of Excellence partnering with Mayo and Cleveland Clinic, and up to 12 weeks of paid NICU leave. The move comes as employer healthcare costs are projected to jump 8.2% in 2027.
Walmart is giving its 1.6 million U.S. employees a significant healthcare upgrade, announcing three new benefits enhancements set to take effect January 1, 2027. The retailer's expanded package includes a "Zero Dollar prescription tier" covering more than 250 generic, brand-name, and specialty medications — a notable perk as drug costs continue to climb for both employers and workers.
The company is also launching a Rare Conditions Center of Excellence (COE) in partnership with top health systems like Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, offering no-cost specialist access — including covered travel — for conditions such as multiple sclerosis and ALS. Additionally, Walmart is introducing up to 12 weeks of dedicated paid NICU leave for employees whose newborns require intensive care within the first 28 days of birth, which can stack with other leave benefits for up to 28 weeks total.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: As healthcare costs surge, Walmart's move bucks the trend of employers scaling back benefits — potentially setting a new benchmark for large-employer health coverage and putting pressure on other major companies to follow suit.
