Two nonprofit health systems are officially joining forces. MultiCare and Samaritan Health Services will complete their merger on Nov. 1 after receiving full regulatory approval. The deal brings 18 hospitals under one umbrella and includes a $700 million investment from MultiCare into Samaritan over the next decade.
Nonprofit health systems MultiCare and Samaritan Health Services have cleared all regulatory hurdles and will officially merge on November 1. The deal, first announced in late 2025, pairs MultiCare's 13-hospital network — headquartered in Tacoma, Washington — with Samaritan's five Oregon-based hospitals. Samaritan will retain its name alongside MultiCare's branding.
The partnership was driven by Samaritan's need for greater resources and technology to meet growing community health demands, as well as to help buffer against looming cuts to healthcare programs. For MultiCare, the deal marks a strategic expansion into Oregon.
Why it matters: Health system consolidations like this one are reshaping how care is delivered across regions. For patients in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, the merger could mean broader access to resources and technology — though consolidation also raises ongoing questions about competition and cost of care.
