The WHO is updating its Abortion Care Guideline by converting it to a living guideline format and reconvening an expert group to review evidence on repeat misoprostol dosing for early medical abortion. The public has until October 29, 2026, to flag any conflicts of interest among the panel members.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is updating its Abortion Care Guideline by transitioning it to a living guideline format — one that allows for targeted, evidence-based revisions as new research or implementation challenges emerge. The first update on the agenda is Recommendation 27b, which covers repeat dosing of the misoprostol-alone regimen for medical abortion at less than 12 weeks of gestation.
To support this process, a subset of the original Guideline Development Group (GDG) — comprising experts who contributed to the original guideline — has been reconvened. Their role is to review the latest synthesized evidence and formulate updated recommendations in line with WHO's handbook for guideline development.
Key Takeaways:
Why it matters: Misoprostol-alone regimens are widely used in low-resource settings where mifepristone may not be available. Updating dosing guidance could directly improve safety and efficacy for people seeking early medical abortion globally.
