This World Sight Day, the optometry world is going big. From free vision screenings across the U.S. to 770,000 eye exams planned across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, organizations are rallying under the #LoveYourEyes banner. Optometry Giving Sight also awarded nearly $1 million in grants to 20 organizations worldwide to build sustainable eye care programs.
World Sight Day (Oct. 8) is sparking a wave of global action in the optometry community, with organizations launching screenings, education initiatives, and grant programs under the #LoveYourEyes theme. Prevent Blindness, partnering with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), rolled out free vision screenings nationwide, digital resources for healthcare professionals, and a pediatric optometry lecture series at Children's Wisconsin offering continuing education credits.
On the global front, the Cure Blindness Project announced plans to deliver over 770,000 eye screenings across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean — contributing to IAPB's goal of 2 million screenings worldwide. Industry players like EssilorLuxottica and CooperVision also joined in, emphasizing partnerships and advocacy to drive long-term access to vision care.
Why it matters: Millions of people worldwide still lack access to basic eye care — and preventable vision loss remains a major public health challenge. World Sight Day 2026 highlights how coordinated global efforts, from grassroots screenings to million-dollar grants, can meaningfully close that gap.
