Adding a topical flurbiprofen patch to oral celecoxib may fast-track pain relief for knee osteoarthritis patients. A 14-day randomized trial found the combo cut pain scores significantly faster than celecoxib alone — especially in the first week. Researchers suggest it could serve as a short-term "bridging" strategy to get patients moving toward rehab sooner.
For patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA), getting pain under control quickly can make all the difference in staying active and starting rehabilitation. A new randomized trial suggests that pairing a topical flurbiprofen patch with oral celecoxib may do just that — delivering faster early pain relief than the pill alone.
The open-label trial enrolled 89 patients with primary knee OA at a Chinese tertiary hospital. Over 14 days, those on the combination therapy showed meaningfully greater pain and function improvements in the first week compared to those on celecoxib alone, though the pain gap closed by day 14. Function scores (WOMAC) remained better in the combo group throughout the full two weeks.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Faster early pain relief could help patients engage sooner with non-drug therapies like physical rehabilitation — a key pillar of long-term OA management. Researchers call this a promising short-term "bridging" strategy, though longer follow-up studies are needed.
