AstraZeneca is doubling down on US expansion, committing over $1 billion to Massachusetts as part of its broader $50 billion US investment plan. The drugmaker opened a new 18-story R&D center in Cambridge's Kendall Square, set to house nearly 2,000 researchers. The move is expected to grow its Massachusetts workforce by more than 50%.
AstraZeneca is making a major bet on American soil, announcing over $1 billion in investment in Massachusetts as part of its sweeping $50 billion US expansion plan. The centerpiece is a brand-new 18-story, 570,000-square-foot R&D facility in Cambridge's Kendall Square — one of the world's premier biotech hubs — which officially opened this week.
The state-of-the-art center will focus on developing treatments for cancer, chronic diseases, rare diseases, and cell therapies. It features 10 floors of labs equipped with robotics, automation, and AI. Combined with AstraZeneca's nearby genomic medicine site, the campus will host nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists, with the company expecting its Massachusetts workforce to grow by more than 50% in the coming years.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: AstraZeneca joins a wave of global pharma giants — including Pfizer, Roche, and Eli Lilly — racing to expand their US footprint amid tariff pressures and supply chain concerns. This investment signals a broader industry shift toward domestic R&D and manufacturing capacity, with real implications for drug development timelines and US healthcare innovation.
