MultiCare Health System is launching its own Medicare Advantage HMO plan in Washington state, marking a major shift from traditional provider to integrated health organization. The MultiCare Health Plan will serve Medicare-eligible patients in Pierce, Thurston, and Spokane counties starting January 1, 2027. Enrollment kicks off October 15 during Medicare Annual Enrollment.
Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System is making a bold move into the insurance world, announcing the launch of the MultiCare Health Plan — a wholly owned, not-for-profit Medicare Advantage HMO subsidiary set to debut in 2027. The plan, which includes Part D prescription drug benefits, will initially serve Medicare-eligible patients across Pierce, Thurston, and Spokane counties in Washington state.
Executives frame the move as a natural evolution toward value-based, integrated care. CEO Bill Robertson called it "more than a new product," emphasizing its role in sustaining local, high-quality healthcare access. The plan will be led by incoming president Karen Decaran-Voight and supported by MultiCare's population health partner, PSW.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Provider-sponsored health plans are a growing trend as health systems look to gain more control over care coordination and financial risk. MultiCare's move signals a broader industry shift toward integrated models — where the same organization both delivers and finances care — which could reshape how patients in the region access and experience healthcare.
