Good news for Medicare enrollees: CMS is projecting a 16% drop in weighted Medicare Advantage premiums for 2027, with prescription drug plan premiums falling even further — down 38%. The average monthly MA premium will dip from $14.37 to $12, and enrollment is expected to hit 34 million. Open enrollment kicks off October 15.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is projecting a notable win for Medicare enrollees heading into 2027. The agency announced that weighted Medicare Advantage (MA) premiums are expected to fall by more than 16% year-over-year, while MA prescription drug plan premiums are on track for an even steeper 38% decline. CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz, M.D., framed the news as part of the administration's push to keep care "affordable and accessible."
Enrollment in MA plans is projected to reach 34 million in 2027 — roughly 47.4% of all Medicare eligibles — and CMS expects the final figure to come in even higher. Nearly all Medicare beneficiaries (99%) will have access to at least one MA plan during open enrollment, with 97% having 10 or more options to choose from.
Why it matters: With Medicare Advantage now covering nearly half of all Medicare enrollees, premium trends have broad financial implications for millions of older Americans and the insurers serving them. Open enrollment runs October 15 – December 7.
