A newly FDA-cleared dialyzer is making it easier to target hard-to-remove toxins in dialysis patients. The ELISIO-HX medium cutoff dialyzer from Nipro received 510(k) clearance in July and can be swapped into existing machines with no new equipment needed. DaVita is already rolling it out, with early reports of patients feeling better and fewer episodes of low blood pressure during treatment.
A new dialyzer is shaking up kidney care in the U.S. The ELISIO-HX (Nipro), a medium cutoff dialyzer, received FDA 510(k) clearance in July and is now commercially available to patients and dialysis providers nationwide. Unlike traditional high-flux dialyzers, it uses super high-flux membrane technology to clear "middle molecules" — larger toxins linked to inflammation, poor well-being, and worse clinical outcomes — while still preserving albumin to protect patients' nutritional status.
The best part for clinics? No new machines required. The ELISIO-HX simply replaces the existing dialyzer in current hemodialysis setups, making adoption straightforward. DaVita, one of the largest dialysis providers in the U.S., has already begun scaling access, with CMO Dr. Jeffrey Giullian noting anecdotal improvements in how patients feel and lower rates of intradialytic hypotension. He envisions middle molecule clearance becoming the new standard of care — much like high-flux dialysis replaced low-flux before it.
Key Takeaways:
Why it matters: Middle molecule clearance has long been a gap in standard dialysis care. With an FDA-cleared, easy-to-implement solution now available, clinicians have a practical new tool to improve outcomes and quality of life for the hundreds of thousands of Americans on dialysis.
