Blood thinners and brain health: a surprising connection
A new study from Karolinska Institutet has found that newer blood thinners — known as NOACs — may do more than just prevent strokes. Among patients living with both Alzheimer's disease and atrial fibrillation, those treated with NOACs showed significantly slower cognitive decline compared to those on the older drug warfarin or those taking no anticoagulants at all. Researchers believe the benefit may stem from improved blood flow and reduced small-scale brain damage.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal, analyzed data from 7,308 patients in Sweden's national dementia registry. Cognitive function was tracked using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) over time. While the difference — about 0.2 MMSE points per year — sounds small, researchers note it could become clinically meaningful over a longer period. Importantly, the observational design means causation has not been established.
