Kids who reason well may age better, too. A large Swedish study found that higher inductive reasoning ability at age 13 was linked to a 16% lower risk of developing dementia over 60+ years of follow-up. Notably, verbal and spatial skills didn't show the same protective effect — it was reasoning specifically that made the difference.
Could how well a child reasons at 13 predict their brain health at 73? A new study says yes. Researchers tracking over 10,500 Swedes born in 1948 found that stronger inductive reasoning in early adolescence was independently associated with a significantly lower risk of dementia decades later — even after accounting for education, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Verbal and spatial abilities, by contrast, showed no such independent link.
The findings, published in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, suggest that inductive reasoning — the ability to identify patterns and draw logical conclusions — may reflect something uniquely protective about brain development and resilience over the life course. Importantly, the association held up even after adjusting for major health conditions that commonly precede dementia.
