A new meta-analysis of 45 studies finds that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), PM10, and nitrogen dioxide is significantly associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and death by suicide. Long-term PM2.5 exposure raised the risk of all three outcomes by 53%. Researchers say environmental factors should be considered modifiable risk factors in suicide prevention strategies.
A large meta-analysis published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health suggests that breathing polluted air may do more than harm your lungs — it could also affect mental health in life-threatening ways. Analyzing 45 studies from countries including the US, South Korea, China, and several European nations, researchers found that short- and long-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM10, as well as long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), were all significantly linked to suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and death by suicide.
While positive trends were observed for sulfur dioxide, ozone, and noise pollution, those associations didn't reach statistical significance. Evidence on water and light pollution remained inconclusive. Experts not involved in the study cautioned that the underlying data is largely observational — meaning causation can't be confirmed — and that confounders like socioeconomic deprivation and urban living may play a role.
