Too much light at night is quietly remodeling hearts. A large UK Biobank study found that people with high nighttime light exposure had thicker, stiffer heart walls and significantly higher risks of heart failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and heart attack. Experts say darker bedrooms — and darker cities — could be a simple, overlooked tool for cardiovascular protection.
A study of over 11,000 adults from the UK Biobank found that exposure to light at night — even at relatively low levels — is linked to measurable, harmful changes in heart structure and function. Participants who wore wrist-based light sensors for seven days and later underwent cardiac MRI showed that those with the highest nighttime light exposure had thicker left ventricular walls, reduced chamber flexibility, and impaired contractile function — classic signs of cardiac remodeling, the kind typically triggered by chronic stress or injury.
The effects didn't stop at the MRI. Tracking over 70,000 participants for nearly a decade, researchers found that high nighttime light exposure was tied to substantially elevated risks for major cardiovascular events.

Why it matters: Light pollution is one of the few environmental cardiovascular risk factors that's both modifiable and affordable to address. Clinicians are being urged to ask patients about their sleep environment, while public health experts see an opportunity in smarter city lighting — shielded fixtures, warm-spectrum bulbs, and motion-activated streetlights — to protect hearts at a population level.
