Treating two tough conditions at once just got clearer. A new meta-analysis found that stimulant-based medications — especially high-dose methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts (MAS) — significantly improved ADHD symptoms and boosted stimulant abstinence rates in adults with both ADHD and stimulant use disorder. Safety profiles were broadly comparable to placebo, though insomnia and decreased appetite were more common.
Treating ADHD and stimulant use disorder together has long been a clinical puzzle — but new research offers some clearer direction. A network meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials involving 456 adults found that stimulant-based pharmacotherapies, particularly high-dose methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts (MAS), outperformed placebo in improving ADHD symptoms and supporting stimulant abstinence. The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, was led by researchers at Yale University School of Medicine.
With no FDA-approved treatments currently available for stimulant use disorder, clinicians have been navigating this dual diagnosis largely off-label. The findings suggest that optimizing stimulant dosing — while closely monitoring for misuse or diversion — could be a viable path forward for this underserved patient population.
