Younger generations are aging faster on the inside — and it's raising their cancer risk. A new study in Nature Medicine found that people born more recently show more advanced biological aging than older generations did at the same age. That accelerated aging was tied to an 8–15% higher risk of early-onset cancers, including lung, colorectal, gastrointestinal, and uterine cancers.
Cancer has long been considered a disease of old age, but it's increasingly showing up in adults under 55. A major new study published in Nature Medicine offers a compelling clue: younger generations appear to be aging faster on a biological level than their predecessors did at the same chronological age — and that accelerated aging is linked to higher cancer risk.
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis analyzed data from over 154,000 UK Biobank participants and more than 10,000 U.S. participants in the NIH's All of Us Research Program. Using blood biomarkers, metabolomics, and blood protein data, they measured both whole-body and organ-specific biological aging across birth cohorts. The findings revealed that faster aging doesn't hit all organs equally — advanced immune system aging was tied to early-onset lung cancer, while accelerated fat tissue aging was linked to early-onset colorectal cancer.
These findings could reshape how doctors approach cancer prevention — shifting from broad population advice to personalized, biology-based screening for younger adults who are biologically aging faster than expected.
