Surviving bacterial meningitis isn't the end of the story. A nearly 60-year Danish cohort study found that meningitis survivors had a 33% higher risk of death compared to the general population — and their siblings did too, hinting at familial factors beyond the infection itself. Survivors also faced elevated risks for stroke, migraines, and hearing loss.

A landmark Danish cohort study tracking patients for nearly six decades found that those who survived bacterial meningitis in the 1960s–70s had a modestly but persistently higher risk of death compared to matched peers — even when follow-up began 20 years after their initial hospitalization.
Perhaps the most striking finding: siblings of meningitis patients also had higher mortality than siblings of control individuals, suggesting that familial or genetic factors — not just the infection itself — may be contributing to the elevated risk. Notably, none of the initial disease or treatment characteristics (like severity of illness or type of bacteria) were linked to long-term mortality risk.
Beyond mortality, survivors faced meaningfully higher risks for cerebrovascular disease, migraines, and hearing loss, though risks for dementia and Parkinson's disease were similar to the general population.
