A new study published in the European Heart Journal found that people exposed to higher levels of light at night showed measurable changes in heart structure and function — and not in a good way.
Researchers from Tulane University tracked over 11,000 UK Biobank participants who wore wrist-based light sensors for seven days. Three years later, cardiac MRI scans revealed that those exposed to nighttime light above three lux had thicker left ventricular walls, reduced chamber volume, and decreased heart muscle flexibility — hallmarks of cardiac remodeling, a process typically triggered by chronic stress or injury that can ultimately lead to heart failure.
