CVS Health is splitting up — and it's a big deal for the healthcare industry. The company announced plans to divide into two distinct entities: one focused on retail pharmacy and the other housing Aetna, Caremark, Oak Street Health, and Signify Health. The separation is expected to be completed in the first half of 2028.
CVS Health is officially breaking up. The healthcare giant announced plans to split into two separate companies following a comprehensive strategic review by its board of directors. The first company — to be called CVS Pharmacy — will house its retail pharmacy locations and Health 100 technology businesses. The second, operating under the CVS Health name on an interim basis, will include Aetna, Caremark, Oak Street Health, and Signify Health.
Current CEO David Joyner will lead the new CVS Health entity, while Prem Shah, currently group president, will take the helm of CVS Pharmacy. Joyner framed the move as one made "from a position of strength," aimed at improving consumer engagement, affordability, and care coordination for both companies going forward.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: This breakup marks one of the most significant structural shifts in U.S. healthcare in years. By separating its pharmacy retail arm from its insurance and care delivery businesses, CVS is betting that focused, nimble companies can better serve patients and clients — and potentially reshape how integrated healthcare models are built going forward.
