Your doctor's notes, now in your chatbot. Athenahealth has launched athenaPatient MCP, a tool that securely connects patient health records from its athenaOne EHR platform directly to Anthropic's Claude AI assistant. Patients control what data is shared and can revoke access anytime — making it easier to understand lab results, medications, and care plans between visits.
Your health records just got a new AI-powered translator. Athenahealth has launched athenaPatient MCP, a new tool that uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect its athenaOne EHR platform directly with Anthropic's Claude AI assistant. Claude Pro and Max users in the U.S. can now link their patient portal credentials to Claude and ask natural-language questions about their own health data — think lab results, medications, visit history, allergies, and care plans — without sharing credentials with the AI.
The move reflects a broader shift in how patients interact with their health information. Rather than waiting for a follow-up call or decoding clinical jargon alone, patients can get personalized, context-aware answers on demand. Athenahealth says it will only allow AI assistants that don't use patient data for model training, and patients can revoke access at any time. The company plans to expand beyond Claude to other AI models.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: As patients increasingly turn to AI for health guidance, tools like athenaPatient MCP could bridge the gap between clinical visits — helping patients arrive better informed and potentially reducing the volume of follow-up questions directed at clinicians. It also signals a growing industry push toward standardized AI interoperability in healthcare.
