Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is teaming up with precision medicine company Medzown to help members with complex conditions — like cancer — find and access clinical trials. Medzown's tech will identify eligible members, match them to trials, and provide hands-on support through scientists and care navigators. The program is voluntary and free for members.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) is partnering with precision medicine company Medzown to bridge a critical gap in clinical trial access for members with complex conditions. Medzown's technology will scan member data to identify those most likely to benefit from novel therapies, match them to relevant trials, and then deploy a team of scientists, clinical trial experts, and care navigators to guide patients and their care teams through the process.
The initiative reflects a broader push to make precision medicine more equitable. As BCBSMA's VP of Clinical Programs Karl Laskowski, M.D., put it, complex diseases like cancer are "scary and difficult to navigate," and clinical trials can offer access to therapies patients "wouldn't have otherwise at their disposal." Medzown CEO Jennifer Levin Carter, M.D., emphasized that the next frontier for precision medicine is ensuring the right patient can actually get access — not just that the therapies exist.
Key Takeaways:
Why it matters: With cancer increasingly manageable as a chronic condition, ensuring patients can access cutting-edge therapies through clinical trials is becoming a healthcare system imperative — and insurer-led programs like this could set a new standard for how payers support precision medicine access.
