New Jersey's largest health system is getting larger. Hackensack Meridian Health has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hunterdon Health in a $230M deal that would bring its hospital count to 19. The investment includes $200M for facilities and community programs, plus $30M to roll out Epic's EHR across Hunterdon's network — all pending state and federal regulatory approval.
New Jersey's largest health system is about to get even bigger. Hackensack Meridian Health has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Central New Jersey's Hunterdon Health in a $230 million deal, expanding its footprint to 19 hospitals. The two organizations had previously signed a letter of intent in June, and are now awaiting state and federal regulatory reviews before closing — though no specific timeline has been announced.
The deal includes a $200 million capital investment toward facilities, programs, and the communities Hunterdon serves, along with a separate $30 million earmarked for deploying Epic's electronic health record system across Hunterdon's network. Hunterdon Health's leadership will continue running day-to-day operations post-merger, and the system will maintain local board oversight for at least six years.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Health system consolidation continues to reshape how care is delivered regionally. This merger could bring expanded specialty services and technology to Central New Jersey communities — but also raises questions about competition and cost as regulators weigh in.
