UnitedHealth Group is back in the black — and then some. The healthcare giant reported $4.1 billion in Q3 2026 profit, nearly doubling its $2.3 billion haul from the same period last year. Both earnings and revenue topped analyst forecasts, and the company raised its full-year earnings guidance to at least $20.50 per share.
UnitedHealth Group is having a strong year. The healthcare conglomerate posted $4.1 billion in profit for Q3 2026 — up sharply from $2.3 billion in Q3 2025 — bringing its year-to-date profit to $15.9 billion, compared to $12 billion through the first nine months of last year. Both earnings and revenue beat Wall Street expectations, according to Zacks Investment Research.
Revenue dipped slightly year-over-year in Q3 (from $113.2B to $112.7B), largely due to contraction in UnitedHealthcare's Medicare business, which shed roughly 935,000 members since the end of 2025. Optum revenues also slipped, but Optum Health's operating margin jumped dramatically — from 0.2% to 3.2% — reflecting improved cost management and operational performance.
CEO Stephen Hemsley credited the results to disciplined execution and a focus on delivering a "simpler, more supportive experience" for patients and clinicians.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: UnitedHealth's rebound signals that major insurers are regaining financial footing after a period of elevated medical costs — a trend worth watching as the industry heads into open enrollment season.
