A star-studded team of AI veterans from Genentech, Meta, and AWS just launched Ortet, a healthcare AI startup backed by $500 million from investment firm Thoreau. The goal? Build a "full-stack" AI platform that connects the biological, clinical, operational, and financial sides of patient care — moving well beyond today's narrow, single-task AI tools.
A new healthcare AI company called Ortet has launched with a $500 million commitment from Thoreau, a healthcare-focused investment platform. The founding team is composed of AI veterans from Genentech, Meta, Amazon Web Services, Spotify, Facebook, and Instagram — led by CEO Kyunghyun Cho, Ph.D., who co-developed foundational AI building blocks like the attention mechanism and Gated Recurrent Unit, key precursors to today's large language models.
Ortet's ambition goes beyond the narrow, task-specific AI tools that currently dominate healthcare. The company wants to build a full-stack platform — from compute and data infrastructure all the way to model deployment — anchored by a foundation model that learns across a patient's entire healthcare journey: biology, treatment, outcomes, and system interactions. The vision is a shared intelligence layer that can serve scientific discovery, clinical care, operations, and financial administration all at once.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Most healthcare AI today solves one problem at a time. If Ortet delivers on its vision, it could represent a meaningful shift toward integrated, patient-centered AI — one that touches every layer of the health system simultaneously.
