The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now reached 7,890 cases and 3,799 deaths across 63 health zones, with the virus spreading to two new areas. The case-fatality rate sits at a grim 48.1%, driven in part by community deaths and delayed care. G20+ leaders pledged $2.9 billion to fight the outbreak, though Africa CDC is urging full financial transparency.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to escalate, with the Bundibugyo Ebola virus now spreading into two additional health zones — Bulu in Sud Ubangi and Dunghu in Haut Uele province — bringing the total to 63 affected health zones across seven provinces. The WHO reports nearly 7,900 cases and 3,800 deaths, with a crude case-fatality rate of 48.1%, driven largely by community deaths and persistent gaps in early detection and access to care.
On the funding front, G20+ leaders convened in New York and pledged a combined $2.9 billion in cash and in-kind support to combat the outbreak. The US alone committed an additional $267 million, bringing its total contribution to $887 million — earmarked for treatment units, burial teams, PPE, surveillance, and contact tracing.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Despite growing international financial commitments, Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya cautioned that "pledges alone will not stop Ebola," stressing the need for full transparency in how every dollar is tracked and spent. With transmission still high and community deaths continuing, the gap between funding promises and on-the-ground impact remains a critical concern.
