The Trump administration is halting Obamacare enrollment for over 760,000 people it says were fraudulently signed up, with VP JD Vance estimating the move will save $2.2 billion in taxpayer money. CMS has already canceled ~315,000 plans and is freezing new broker registrations through February 2027. Unauthorized enrollments could cost the federal government up to $6.6 billion in 2026 alone.
The Trump administration is canceling Obamacare coverage for more than 760,000 enrollees it believes were fraudulently signed up, with Vice President JD Vance announcing the move as part of a broader anti-fraud effort. CMS has already canceled roughly 315,000 plans last month, citing unverified citizenship or immigration documentation and suspected improper enrollments. Vance described the affected group as "a mix of phantom people" and real individuals who don't meet eligibility requirements — some of whom were reportedly enrolled by brokers without their knowledge.
In a sweeping industry-wide move, CMS is using an emergency rulemaking process to freeze new Obamacare broker registrations through February 1, 2027, bypassing the standard notice-and-comment period. The agency is also barring 569 brokers accused of submitting "statistically implausible" applications. Critics warn the blanket freeze could harm legitimate brokers and reduce enrollment in an already-contracting market as enhanced COVID-era subsidies expire.
Why it matters: This crackdown represents one of the largest disruptions to ACA marketplace enrollment in the law's history, with major implications for insurers, brokers, and millions of Americans who rely on subsidized coverage.
