Scientists propose a smarter way to test anti-aging drugs. Researchers have identified 12 candidate "aging rate indicators" (ARIs) — biological signals measurable at a single point in time — that could reveal far sooner whether a drug is actually slowing the aging process. If validated, ARIs could make mouse studies four times faster and 20 times cheaper, potentially paving the way for human clinical trials in much shorter timeframes.
One of the biggest bottlenecks in aging science is time — it can take 3 to 6 years just to complete a single mouse lifespan study, and decades more to see results in humans. Now, researchers publishing in Frontiers in Science think they've found a shortcut. They've proposed 12 candidate "aging rate indicators" (ARIs) — measurable biological signals that can be taken at a single point in time to reveal whether an intervention has shifted an animal into a slow-aging state, without waiting for lifespan outcomes.
Unlike traditional "biological age" tests that measure accumulated aging and require multiple readings over time, ARIs are designed to detect the pace of aging early on. The team drew on data from the NIA-supported Interventions Testing Program, which has identified 14 agents — including drugs, calorie-restricted diets, and single-gene mutations — that significantly extend mouse lifespan, several of which work even when started in late adulthood.
