The AHA's PREVENT risk equations are now integrated into Epic, the largest EHR platform in the US. The tools — covering CVD, ASCVD, and heart failure risk — are now automatically available to clinicians without manual calculation. Experts say this reduces workflow friction and frees up time for meaningful patient conversations about prevention.
The American Heart Association's PREVENT risk equations — introduced in 2023 to replace the older Pooled Cohort Equations — are now seamlessly embedded in Epic, the EHR platform hosting over 325 million patient records across the US. The suite includes PREVENT-CVD, PREVENT-ASCVD, and PREVENT-HF, offering 10- and 30-year risk estimates for MI, stroke, and heart failure in adults aged 30–79 with no prior CVD history.
Previously, clinicians had to manually open a separate calculator mid-appointment, creating a workflow gap. Now, risk scores surface automatically within the patient chart, letting physicians focus on what matters most: the human conversation around risk reduction and shared decision-making. The integration also aligns with the 2025 multisociety hypertension guidelines, which formally endorsed PREVENT as the updated standard.
