We know gray matter shrinks as we get older — but a new study suggests that's not the whole story. Researchers at USC's Keck School of Medicine found that the brain's superficial white matter (the short-range "local roads" connecting nearby brain regions just beneath the surface) may act as a buffer against the cognitive effects of gray matter loss. The study, published in Alzheimer's & Dementia, analyzed brain imaging and cognitive tests from 459 adults aged 60 and older in India.
People with healthier superficial white matter performed better on language tasks and showed a weaker link between gray matter loss and cognitive decline — suggesting that good local brain connectivity may offer a degree of cognitive resilience. Notably, this protective association was even more pronounced among people with no formal education or those living in rural areas.
