GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic might be tapping into the biology of aging. A NIH-funded mouse study found semaglutide extended lifespan and improved memory, muscle function, and metabolic health in older mice — outperforming calorie restriction in key areas. Separately, a human clinical trial found the drug slowed biological aging markers in adults with HIV, marking the first such evidence in people.
GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are already celebrated for weight loss, blood sugar control, and heart health. Now, two new studies suggest they may also be tapping into something far more fundamental: the biology of aging itself.
In a NIH-funded study from UC Berkeley, researchers gave semaglutide to 20-month-old female mice for three months. The treated mice showed better memory, stronger muscles, reduced inflammation, and improved tissue repair — and those given the drug until death lived nearly 100 days longer than untreated mice. Crucially, semaglutide outperformed calorie restriction — long considered the gold standard for longevity research — in several key areas, suggesting it may activate a distinct biological pathway. On the human side, a UC San Diego clinical trial published in Nature Communications found that semaglutide slowed biological aging markers in adults with HIV, the first randomized, placebo-controlled evidence of this effect in people.

Why it matters: Most chronic diseases are rooted in aging. If GLP-1 drugs genuinely slow that process — even partially — it could reframe how clinicians think about prescribing them, potentially expanding their use well beyond obesity and diabetes to healthy older adults. Larger clinical trials will be needed to confirm whether these effects translate broadly across human populations.
