Parkinson's disease is well known for its motor symptoms, but a new study published in Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics highlights a lesser-discussed impact: significantly impaired contrast sensitivity across a range of lighting conditions. Researchers from the University of Valencia tested 61 Parkinson's patients against age-matched healthy controls using six illumination levels — including photopic, mesopic, and glare conditions — and found meaningful visual deficits at a spatial frequency of six cycles per degree, where visual sensitivity typically peaks.
The study suggests that standard photopic (bright light) testing alone isn't enough to capture the full scope of visual dysfunction in Parkinson's patients. Mesopic conditions — simulating low-light environments like dusk or dimly lit rooms — may actually be the most sensitive for detecting and monitoring disease progression.
