After a cardiac arrest, body temperature in the next 24 hours could make a critical difference. A large study found that patients who maintained a near-normal peak temperature (36.8–37.3 °C) after resuscitation had the highest survival rates. Both fever and abnormally low temperatures were linked to significantly worse outcomes.
After surviving a cardiac arrest, what happens to your body temperature in the next 24 hours could be a strong predictor of whether you make it home. A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association analyzed over 36,500 in-hospital cardiac arrest patients and found that those with a peak temperature in the 36.8–37.3 °C range had the best odds of survival — a classic inverted U-shaped curve where both extremes spell trouble.
The study drew from the Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation registry (2015–2024) and excluded patients treated with therapeutic hypothermia to capture the natural post-resuscitation temperature trajectory. The findings held true for neurological outcomes as well, with the normal-temperature group showing the highest rates of favorable brain function at discharge.
