Dirty classrooms may be hurting kids' lungs. A large European study found that high levels of two bacteria — Streptomyces and Mycobacterium — in classroom dust were associated with measurably lower lung function in school children. Researchers say the findings highlight the need for clinicians to ask about school environments when evaluating kids with respiratory issues.
Classroom air quality just got a new concern. A study using data from the SINPHONIE project — spanning 4,739 school children across 294 classrooms in 22 European countries — found that high exposure to two common environmental bacteria in classroom dust, Streptomyces and Mycobacterium spp., was linked to reduced lung function in children. The associations held even after adjusting for factors like age, BMI, passive smoking, ambient air pollution, and mold.
While the reductions in lung function were modest at the individual level, researchers emphasize that children spend significant hours in classrooms, making widespread school exposure a meaningful public health concern. Importantly, the cross-sectional design means causality cannot be confirmed, and researchers caution against routine bacterial dust screening in schools just yet.
