Australian researchers from Flinders and Adelaide universities analyzed 22 studies and found that toilet flushing generates aerosols that can reach adult face height and remain airborne for at least 20 seconds. The microbes can originate from waste left in the bowl or from the flushing water itself.
The bigger the flush and the more microbes present, the greater the aerosol cloud. Higher microbial loads in the toilet water were consistently linked to higher concentrations of bioaerosols in the surrounding air — often detected closest to the toilet at seat height. Closing the lid showed inconsistent benefits; aerosols may simply escape through gaps between the lid and bowl rather than rising straight up.
