Scientists from the University of Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet, and international partners have published a landmark study in Nature that maps the genetic processes driving prostate cancer. By analyzing nearly 1,000 prostate tumors, the team identified eight distinct mutational "fingerprints" — patterns left behind in the genome that reveal how and why cancer cells develop. One of the study's biggest surprises is the role of DNA replication errors, which appear to drive roughly one-third of prostate cancer cases — far more than previously thought. Four of the eight fingerprint patterns were specifically linked to a higher risk of cancer spreading, particularly in testosterone-driven tumors.
