The danger varies widely by cancer type, with pancreatic and lung cancers posing the highest risk. A large retrospective cohort study out of Israel has found that a cancer diagnosis dramatically raises the risk of ischemic stroke — particularly in the months immediately following diagnosis. Analyzing data from over 182,000 adults with invasive cancer, researchers found that stroke risk was nearly twice as high as in the general population within the first year, with the sharpest spike occurring in the first three months after diagnosis.
The risk wasn't uniform across cancer types. Pancreatic cancer carried the highest stroke risk (nearly 6x the general population), followed by esophageal, lung, and gallbladder cancers. Breast and prostate cancer diagnoses, by contrast, showed no significant elevation in stroke risk. Younger patients (ages 40–54) and those with metastatic disease also faced disproportionately higher risks. Researchers attribute the elevated risk to cancer-driven hypercoagulability, systemic inflammation, shared vascular risk factors like smoking, and potentially cancer treatments — though the study lacked clinical detail to fully untangle these factors.
