A new Nature Communications study found that gut microbiota composition outperformed chronological age in predicting systemic inflammation and disease risk. People with the Bacteroides 2 enterotype showed an inflammation-linked aging profile decades earlier than others, while those with a high-diversity microbiome had lower inflammation and fewer diagnoses over a 9-year follow-up.

A large study published in Nature Communications analyzed paired fecal and blood samples from 1,199 adults and found that gut microbiota composition was a stronger predictor of systemic inflammation and physiological health markers than chronological age alone. Gut microbiome profiles explained more variance than age for 97% of inflammatory cytokines and 84% of physiological measures examined.
The research zeroed in on distinct microbial "enterotypes" — community profiles of gut bacteria — and their links to health outcomes. People carrying the Bacteroides 2 enterotype showed an inflammaging-like profile (chronic low-grade inflammation associated with aging) up to 37 years earlier than those with other enterotypes, and faced a higher risk of developing diseases across multiple organ systems over a follow-up period averaging 8 years. On the flip side, a high-diversity microbiome — rich in short-chain fatty acid–producing bacteria — was tied to lower inflammation and reduced disease incidence.
