A new study links anti-intrinsic factor antibody (IFA) positivity to a higher risk of anemia in autoimmune gastritis (AIG) patients. Iron-deficiency anemia, specifically, appears tied to H. pylori infection. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, could help clinicians better identify and manage anemia risk in AIG patients.
A retrospective study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology sheds new light on the relationship between autoimmune gastritis (AIG), anemia, and H. pylori infection. Analyzing 117 AIG patients, researchers found that nearly 40% had anemia — split between iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and pernicious anemia (PA). Notably, anti-intrinsic factor antibody (IFA) positivity emerged as an independent risk factor for anemia, while H. pylori infection was more commonly seen in patients with IDA than PA.
The study also found that pepsinogen-I (PG-I) levels were significantly lower in anemic patients compared to non-anemic ones, suggesting more advanced gastric atrophy in this group. Patients with PA showed markedly lower PG-I and PG-II levels and a reduced PG-I/II ratio compared to those with IDA, pointing to distinct underlying mechanisms for each anemia subtype.
