Strep throat is a common childhood illness — but for 8–10% of kids, the bacteria stick around long after antibiotics clear the symptoms. These asymptomatic carriers feel perfectly healthy yet can spread Group A Streptococcus (GAS) to others for months or even years. Researchers from Binghamton University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin set out to understand why, publishing their findings in Cell Reports.
Using whole genome sequencing, the team analyzed GAS samples from children treated for strep throat and found no distinct carrier-specific bacterial genotypes. In other words, the bug itself doesn't seem to determine who becomes a carrier — pointing the finger instead at the child's own biology.
